The Church as a group of people meeting together to worship goes back to the days of Matthew Henry, but then, in 1772, when some decided to follow the Unitarian path a group broke away and founded a Church in Queen Street in the centre of Chester.  The building opening in 1776 as Queen Street Congregational Church, it also started a Sunday School for the canal boat people, the canal being at the end of the street.  It became the ‘Mother Church’ to other Congregational Churches at Great Boughton, Hoole, Upton and Handbridge.

The Church continued to meet in Queen Street until the Sunday School room was burnt down by a fire which damaged the adjacent Church walls.  It was then decided to move to the present site at Vicars Cross, the building opening as  Vicars Cross (Queen Street Memorial) Church, later becoming the United Reformed Church when the Presbyterian and Congregational Churches combined.
